What set construction includes
Set construction turns the art department's drawings into a physical set: walls built as flats, wild walls that pull out for camera, platforms and stairs, practical doors and windows, ceilings where the shot needs them, and the facades and hero pieces that carry a scene. Paint, aging, and texture finish the surfaces, and graphics and signage make the world specific.
We build in our Las Vegas facility and install on a stage, in a studio, or on location. Props and set pieces are built to match, with routed and laser-cut details cut by The Job Shop in our building. Set dressing, practical fixtures, and rented furniture usually come from the art department's own sources; tell us what's supplied so the build plans around it.
Shooting in Las Vegas: permits and registration
Film permits in Nevada are issued by local government. The City of Las Vegas, Clark County, Henderson, and North Las Vegas each run their own permitting, and state law (NRS 231.128) requires productions to register with Film Nevada, the state film office, at no charge. In unincorporated Clark County, a permit covers commercial photography, music videos, documentaries, film, and TV, and completed applications are due at least 10 calendar days before the first day of filming (as of 2026).
Effects add another approval: Clark County's film permit guidance says pyrotechnics, flame, and special effects must meet county code and need Clark County Fire Department approval, and filming on private property calls for a location agreement. The permits are the production's to file. What a local shop changes is the turnaround: notes from a tech scout or a director's walk-through can be built across town before the next prep day.
Building for the camera: materials and finishes
A set is built to the lens. The methods overlap with scenic fabrication for live shows, but the camera is less forgiving than the back row. Surfaces the camera sees in close-up get real materials or careful scenic paint; walls that only appear in wide shots can be lighter and faster to build. Flats are typically wood-framed with plywood or hardboard skins, carved foam handles ornament and stonework, and veneers, laminates, and wallcoverings go where texture has to hold up at high resolution.
Paint carries much of the illusion. Scenic painters age, glaze, and texture new construction so it reads as plaster, brick, timber, or metal with a history. Colors should be checked under the production's lights and through the camera when possible, because a finish that looks right in the shop can shift on screen. Printed set graphics and large-format signage come from Vegas Visual on the same schedule.
Changes on the day, strike, and restoring the space
Shoots change. A director wants a wall moved, a color reads wrong on camera, or an insert shot needs a piece nobody drew. Having a carpenter and a painter from the build team on call during the shoot makes those changes fast. Before the first shoot day, agree on which walls are wild, which pieces might move, and where spare material should be staged.
Strike is part of the build plan. Stages and locations have return conditions, so the plan covers how the set comes apart, what is saved for reshoots or the next season, what gets recycled or thrown away, and how floors and walls are protected and restored. For a series, saved pieces should be labeled and photographed at strike so the set can be rebuilt to match.
Commercials, music videos, and brand content
Commercial and content shoots compress everything: a short prep, one or two shoot days, and a client watching the monitor. The build has to be right at the first setup, and product sets need surfaces that make the product look its best without glare or texture fighting it. Music videos usually push the other way, toward bold, camera-first environments that only need to work from a few angles.
For brand content, a set can be designed to serve more than one shoot: a backdrop system with swappable graphics, a kitchen or living room that can be redressed, or a product table built to travel. When a campaign continues into a brand activation or corporate events, the team that built the set can carry the look into the room.
